GCF Refresher / Preparation Course
Course Time: 9:00am – 5.00pm

Course Content
- Machine maintenance, set up, squaring, safety procedures
- Review of Fine Art Trade Guild’s Mountboard & Framing Standards
- Mount cutting, single mounts, double mounts, multi-aperture mounts, V Groove Mounts
- Conservation mounting / hinging / use of undermounts
- Ruled line drawing, set up, using corner gauge. Candidates for GCF Examination, must
be fully conversant with the use of a Ruling Pen
- Canvas Squaring and Stretching around wooden stretcher bars
- Squaring / attaching / framing of pieces of decorated fabric Art (NEW Element of
GCF Examination 2010 / 2011)
- Practical elements of the GCF Examination will be performed, as well as a mock examination.
- This course will ‘advise only on the 3 obligatory pre-prepared framed test pieces
that are required. They are as follows: these items must be made in your own workshop......
- Framed print to Conservation Standards, with 2 sets of ruled lines around the mount
or a V Groove
- Framed print, double mounted to Commended Standard
- Stretched Oil Canvas, around wooden stretcher bars 7 framed
- Candidates may bring along their favourite pieces of equipment, such as: Ruling Pen,
rule, mountcutter, knife, etc…..
- Required Reading / Materials Required
- 1 x prints, minimum size 7 x 5 inch (178 x 127mm)
- 1 x Piece of Decorated fabric Art, minimum 7x5 inch / (178 x 127mm)
- Oil painting on canvas, minimum size 7 x 5 inch (178 x 127mm) & Stretcher Bars
- *NEW* 2010 GCF Study Guide, Ruling Pen, Corner Gauge, Rule, Inks / Acrylics / Watercolours

GCF Examination dates are usually at the end of March / start of April and October
each year. Other examination dates can be organised to suit candidates, this usually
incurs an extra cost of the examiners travelling expenses, as all the examiners come
from the UK mainland.

Preparations are in progress to organise a ‘GCF Weekend’ where candidates will attend
a 1-Day Refresher on a Friday and then take their GCF Exam on the Saturday or Sunday.
