10-Day, Basic to Advanced Skills Course

 

This course is designed to give the student a good working and practical knowledge of the picture framing business. More in depth time is spent on the basics, then moving into more advanced techniques, such as fabric framing, box framing, advanced mountcutting and mount design, hand finished frames, etc. Course Time: 9:00am – 5.00pm

• Machinery familiarisation, Health & Safety, Machinery Demonstrations
• Review of Fine Art Trade Guild Mountboard & Framing Standards
• Making / Joining Frames
• Calculation of moulding sizes
• Setting up of Morso mitre cutter, Use of the 3 scales on Morso / Guillotine
• Setting up of Underpinner, Talk about position of wedges
• Joining the frame, glue to be used on all mitres
• Cutting Glass / MDF / Measuring and cutting glass / MDF / other backing boards

 

Mount Cutting

 

• Mountboard Standards, Whitecore/Conservation/Solid Core/Cotton Core
• Basic Mountcutting…….cutting single & double mount
• Choosing mount colours, colour co-ordination and design
• Assessing the perfect mount cut, Setting up / calibration of mount cutter
• Cutting the mount, Single mounts / Double mounts
• Conservation Mounting / Hinging / Framing

• Mount cutting, Uneven borders / calculation of, setting out
• Conservation Mounting / Hinging / Undermounts

• Wash-lines – setting up, calculation, and drawing of 2 sets of lines
• Mounting techniques using fillets, Foam core / wooden fillets
• Hand finished fillets

 

• Attaching, Squaring, and mounting of decorated fabric art
• Stretching / Fabric Art Squaring & Stretching Assembly of wooden stretcher bars
• Canvas stretching / using stretching pliers, staples or tacks
• Calculation of canvas size for frame
• Attaching corner wedges & wire to hold wedges in place
  Cutting / pinning of frame
• Assembly of stretched canvas within frame rebate / Attaching canvas to frame using Z clips / canvas offset / spring clips
• Stretching & Squaring of X-Stitch / tapestry, with T pins / Lacing project
• Introduction to Box Framing / Stacking (Double Framing) Frames

• Understanding Artwork and Framing of differing mediums / subjects
• Differing mediums, i.e.. Oils, Acrylics, Watercolours, Pastels
• Differing Artwork on paper, i.e.. Photographs, LE Prints, OE Prints,
• Original Artists Prints, Etchings, Engravings, Giclees, etc.

• Framing Pastels / Job Sheets / Legal Responsibilities, etc.
• Description of pastel properties / using fixatives, etc.
• Conservation framing technique
• Foam core spacers / frame spacers / creating space between front of image and rear of glass
• Close framing techniques

 

• Drymounting / Heatsealing
• Drymounting COLD, i.e.. Self Adhesive Board
• Drymounting HOT, Vacuum Press

• Decorative / Creative ~ Hand Painted Mounts / Hand Painted Frames
• Hand finishing of Obeche mouldings, using Everest paints / waxes
